Police arrest suspect, as one dies in Ibadan fracas

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with a criminal altercation that resulted in the death of an individual in Asalu Community, Lalupon, Ibadan.
The command also said it foiled an armed robbery operation and confiscated an articulated vehicle bearing a fuel tanker in another operation.
In separate statements on Monday, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ayanlade Olayinka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the operations were parts of efforts to install law and order in the state.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the community authorities reported to Iyana-Offa Division that while sleeping, they were alerted by the community security guards about a confrontation involving a group of youths within the community.
“The injured individuals were immediately rushed to Ojo Oluwa Hospital, Iyana-Offa, for medical attention, where one of the victims, identified as Kehinde, also known as ‘Ogo Ojigbo,’ later succumbed to his injuries.
“Upon receipt of the report, a team of police operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer, Supol Iyana-Offa, promptly proceeded to the scene and the hospital.
“Photographs were taken for documentation purposes, and one suspect, Giwa Sodiq, was arrested in connection with the incident.
“The corpse of the deceased has been deposited at Adeoyo State Hospital morgue, Ring Road, Ibadan, for preservation and autopsy.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects to ensure full prosecution. The Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, commends the swift response of the operatives and urges residents to remain vigilant and report criminal activities promptly.
“He also appeals to members of the public with credible information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects to come forward and assist the police.
“He further appreciates the continuous guidance of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, in strengthening community policing and law enforcement across the state,” Ayanlade said.
Speaking on the foiled armed robbery, the police spokesman said the incident occurred along Ogbomoso – Ilorin highway.
“The Oyo State Police Command has recorded a significant success in its efforts to curb highway criminality, following the arrest of a suspected armed robber and the disruption of a highway robbery along the Ogbomoso – Ilorin Expressway.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that a joint patrol team comprising police operatives and local vigilantes encountered armed robbers at Egbeda Village via Ogbomoso.
“The hoodlums had blocked the highway and stopped a tanker loaded with diesel, driven by one Surajudeen Sulaiman.
“The robbers forcibly dispossessed the tanker driver and his motor boys of their belongings. A gun duel ensued between the fleeing hoodlums and the police patrol team, during which one of the suspects, later identified as Dere Yahaya, aged 32, was apprehended.
“Other members of the gang escaped into the bush, sustaining bullet wounds.
“Following the incident, the police and vigilante team embarked on intensive bush combing and a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
“The operation underscores the command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining public safety and safeguarding lives and property along major highways in Oyo State,” sia dthe police boss.
