Ondo NUJ carpets FG on deplorable roads

The Nigeria Union of Journalists Ondo State Council has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for the dualisation of some federal roads but expressed deep concern over the deplorable condition of the ones linking Ondo North, particularly the Akoko area.
This was contained in a communique issued at the statutory congress at the NUJ Press Centre and signed by Olaoluwa Meshack, State Secretary.
At the congress, which was presided over by the State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, the NUJ said the dualisation of the Ilesa-Akure-Owo-Benin road, reconstruction of Akure-Ado Ekiti road and Akure-Ondo-Ore road were good ideas, but more needed to be done in relation to roads in Ondo North.
To solve the problem, the communique enjoined federal lawmakers and government’s appointees from that part of Ondo State to rise to the occasion by facilitating urgent rehabilitation of such roads, particularly the Ikare- Ogbagi-Irun-Akoko-Ado Ekiti road, as well as the Owo-Ipele-Isua Akoko-Kabba road.
The communique noted the ongoing road construction efforts by the government across the state, but expressed reservations over the slow pace of works on some of the projects, especially Akungba-Ikare Akoko road, Okitipupa-Igbokoda road and Akure-Idanre road.
The communique therefore urged contractors handling the road projects to double up efforts at completing them.
While describing the ongoing construction of flyover at Oba Adesida Road in Akure as a lofty project, it urged the Ondo State Government to make alternative routes motorable to ease traffic diversion, especially the clearing of Arakale road for easy and free flow of traffic in the state capital.
On environmental issues, the communique described the pockets of flooding across the state as pathetic, calling on both the state and local governments to be more proactive in preventing flooding and allow such to happen before taking actions.
The congress commended the improvement being witnessed at the state-owned media organization, the Ondo State Radiovision Corporation and OSRC media Group, and implored the state government to place the television station on Cable Networks for effective service delivery and career fulfillment for the workers.
The Congress observed a one-minute silence in honour of Sir Ademola Adetula, (a former NUJ State Officer and immediate past Managing Director of The Hope Newspaper) who passed on recently, a few days to his 74th Birthday.
The union described him as one of the most brilliant journalists produced in the state and prayed to God to grant his soul peaceful rest and family fortitude to bear the loss.
