I struggled to be accepted as a black girl in London- Tiwa Savage
Tiwa Savage
Afrobeat music diva Tiwa Savage, has admitted that she once struggled to be identified as a black girl, while she was growing up. The ‘Kelekele’ crooner, noted that as a black girl growing up in London, she struggled to be accepted and this made her feel disconnected from her African roots.
The singer made this revelation while speaking at the Unstoppable African event. She noted that growing up abroad disconnected her from her African roots because Africans were not largely recognize in the Western world those days.
In her words, “Afrobeat is the fastest-growing genre in the world. We kind of created it with nothing; no support, no infrastructure, no real belief even from our own people initially. I remember growing up in London, and I was not happy being African. But now I’m so proud because of how big Afrobeats is growing.”
She also refuted claims that afro beat music is just a passing trend insisting that the music and culture has continued to grow in acceptance especially among the young population.
