The Command announced the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, January 18, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, and shared in Kaduna journalists group chat.

According to officer Kiyawa, the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation directed by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and supervised by the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

He disclosed that the suspects were apprehended during a sting operation conducted between late Friday night and early Saturday morning.

Those arrested were identified as Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu, 40, also known as “Chebe”, of Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, 21, also known as “Wawo”, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters.

Auwalu, described as the leader of the group and a nephew of the deceased woman, confessed to the crime during interrogation.

He also admitted that the same group was involved in other violent attacks in Kano in recent times.

Items recovered from the suspects include blood-stained clothing, two mobile phones belonging to the victims, a cutlass, a club and cash allegedly taken from the scene, police said.

“The suspects are currently in custody, and the investigation is ongoing,” Kiyawa said, adding that further developments would be made public.

The Kano State Police Command commended officers involved in the operation and thanked residents for their cooperation, prayers and support, assuring the public of its commitment to ensuring that those responsible would face justice.
