Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has confirmed that the proposed Igbo Thanksgiving Day will now hold on the last Saturday of January every year, instead of the previously suggested Sunday.

The National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, confirmed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Enugu, following the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday.

Chukwu said the adjustment followed a formal request by the Igbo College of Bishops, prompting the NEC to modify two resolutions adopted at the Imeobi meeting of Dec. 23, 2025.

According to him, the event has been renamed Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day and will be observed on the last Saturday of January every year, in perpetuity.

“These modifications are spiritually driven and will be formally presented to the next Imeobi meeting scheduled before the end of the first quarter of 2026,” Chukwu said.

He added that on the designated day, all churches in Igbo land would observe adoration and prayers from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Chukwu also said the NEC approved a nine-man committee, chaired by Deputy President General, Mr Okey Nwadinobi, to define modalities and terms of reference for standing committees.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide remains committed to unity, spiritual upliftment, and the collective advancement of the Igbo nation and national wellbeing,” he said.

The meeting, he explained, was presided over by President General, Sen. Azuta Mbata, with all 16 NEC members in attendance.

He added that representatives of the Igbo College of Bishops, including Archbishops David Onuoha and Sosthenes Eze, were also present among other eminent clerics.
