President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday commissioned the Gateway International Airport and a major economic hub in Ogun State, describing the projects as critical milestones in Nigeria’s journey toward sustainable growth and national prosperity

The President, who was in the state for the landmark event, praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for what he called a “remarkable vision” that has driven infrastructural and economic transformation over the past seven years.

Tinubu said the projects commissioned along the economic corridor reflect a commitment to national development, noting that Ogun State has become a model for subnational growth.

“I appreciate the opportunity to join you today in celebrating the remarkable vision of this governor and his predecessors,” the President said during his address.

He stressed that the newly commissioned infrastructure represents a major economic hub capable of boosting trade, investment, and industrial expansion in the region.

The President commended the people of Ogun State for their consistent support for the government, stating that their cooperation has contributed significantly to the success recorded so far.

He also thanked residents for their continued faith in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), assuring that the party remains committed to people-focused development.

“Our investments are centered on our people. The infrastructure we see today reflects our confidence in the future of our country,” Tinubu said.

The President acknowledged that ongoing macroeconomic reforms may be challenging but maintained that early signs indicate positive outcomes for the nation’s economy.

He added that Nigeria is gradually moving beyond years of economic mismanagement and is now on a path toward recovery and growth.

Tinubu further disclosed that, in addition to the airport, several other projects were virtually commissioned, including initiatives in energy, gas, and transportation.

According to him, these projects are designed to impact multiple sectors of society and improve the quality of life for citizens.

He expressed satisfaction with the government’s focus on mobility, security, and agriculture, describing them as critical pillars of national development.

The President noted that the introduction of modern transportation solutions, including new vehicles, signals a shift toward innovation and efficiency.

On security, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, pledging that the country would overcome violence and terrorism.

“I assure you that we will continue to make progress. Nigeria is determined to be great,” he said.

In his remarks, Governor Dapo Abiodun described the President’s presence as both historic and symbolic, reflecting strong federal support for subnational development.

He said Ogun State aligns fully with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he noted is repositioning Nigeria for economic recovery and sustainable growth.

Abiodun highlighted key federal reforms, including foreign exchange unification and fuel subsidy removal, describing them as bold steps that are restoring investor confidence.

He noted that the reforms are already attracting capital inflows and improving Nigeria’s competitiveness on the global stage.

The governor also cited improvements in tax administration, digital governance, and institutional strengthening as part of ongoing efforts to address structural challenges.

Providing an overview of Ogun’s economic performance, Abiodun disclosed that the state’s internally generated revenue has increased from ₦40 billion to over ₦250 billion annually within seven years.

He added that the state’s Gross Domestic Product has grown from ₦4 trillion to ₦17 trillion, underscoring rapid economic expansion.

Abiodun described the Gateway International Airport as a defining legacy project, noting that it was built from the ground up with modern aviation facilities.

He revealed that the airport features a nearly four-kilometre runway, advanced control systems, and cargo handling infrastructure aimed at boosting trade and logistics.

The governor also announced the launch of Gateway Airlines, which will begin operations with Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft to enhance regional connectivity.

He further disclosed that over 1,600 kilometres of roads have been constructed or rehabilitated across the state to improve access to key economic corridors.

In the housing sector, Abiodun said more than 7,000 affordable homes have been delivered, while over 140 primary healthcare centres and a 200-bed medical facility have been completed.

He added that a 34-megawatt independent power project is strengthening energy supply, alongside ongoing agricultural mechanisation initiatives.

Speaking at the event, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the collaboration between the executive and legislature in driving development.

Akpabio noted that without proper appropriation and cooperation, the scale of progress recorded in Ogun State would not have been possible.

He said federal reforms have improved revenue allocation to states, enabling them to execute projects, pay salaries, and reduce reliance on borrowing.

The Senate President also highlighted ongoing efforts toward decentralisation in power and governance, allowing states greater control over development.

He praised Tinubu for laying the foundation for many of the reforms during his tenure as governor of Lagos State, noting that the model is now being replicated nationwide.

Akpabio reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting the executive in sustaining development efforts across the country.

The event drew dignitaries from across the federation, marking a significant moment in Ogun State’s economic evolution and Nigeria’s broader development agenda.
