The 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has explained why he joined other top political figures in Abuja on Wednesday in protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC’s) decision to derecognise the Senator David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)

Obi was seen alongside prominent names including Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Aminu Tambuwal, all carrying placards of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during what was tagged a “Save Our Democracy” protest.

The demonstration followed INEC’s decision to deny recognition to the ADC leadership of former Senate President David Mark, a move that has stirred debate within political circles.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) page after the protest, Obi described the gathering as more than just a political statement, saying it was a reflection of the country’s democratic journey.

“Today, I joined fellow Nigerians, leaders, and members of the ADC led by National Chairman Sen. David Mark to participate in a peaceful ‘Save Democracy’ protest,” he wrote.

He added that the protest was a call to resist what he described as attempts to undermine democratic values and silence opposition voices.

“We must resist the suffocation of our democracy by those who once claimed to have sacrificed to defend it, but are now doing everything possible to undermine it and silence opposition,” Obi stated.

The former Anambra governor also warned that history would judge those who compromise democratic ideals for political gain, insisting that Nigerians must continue to demand accountability.
