A truck crushed two middle-aged fruit sellers to death on Wednesday morning along Reuben Fasoranti Road, Akure, the Ondo State capital, in the aftermath of a traffic jam caused by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO).
The Daily Monitor learned that VIO officers were undertaking a stop-and-check operation on vehicle licences, which allegedly caused traffic congestion in the area.
According to an eyewitness, the truck rammed into vehicles during the exercise and crushed the two middle-aged brothers on a motorcycle, narrowly missing a commercial driver.
The deceased were said to be fruit sellers operating beside Iyeoma Plaza, Alagbaka, with police officers from the Ijapo Division later evacuating their bodies from the scene of the accident, which occurred close to the headquarters of the Vehicle Inspection Office.
Speaking with The Daily Monitor, a commercial driver who escaped the accident said:
“The truck crushed the two men on the motorcycle instantly. I thank God for sparing my life.”
Blaming the VIOs for the incident, angry youths stormed their headquarters, but vigilant police officers prevented them from causing damage.
