Key national issues, including economic recovery and citizens’ welfare were on the table on Thursday when Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed met with former 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
The closed-door meeting took place at Government House Bauchi where both leaders held discussions, seen as part of ongoing consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mohammed, who shared details of the meeting in a post on X on Thursday, said he received Obi at the Government House in Bauchi, describing the engagement as timely.
“Today, I received the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and a chieftain of the ADC, Mr. Peter Obi, at the Government House in Bauchi. Our discussions centered on critical national issues, including economic recovery and the welfare of our citizens,” he said.
The governor noted that the meeting also provided an opportunity to review the country’s political climate and the need for institutional strengthening.
“We also took time to review the evolving political landscape and emphasized the urgent need to strengthen our democratic institutions,” he added.
Mohammed commended Obi for the visit, stressing the importance of dialogue among political actors in addressing national challenges.
“I commended him for the visit, as engagements of this nature foster mutual understanding and help drive practical, people-focused solutions,” he said.
He further revealed that both leaders agreed on the need for political stakeholders to prioritise national interest over partisan considerations.
“We jointly urged all stakeholders to rise above partisanship and place the national interest at the forefront of all decisions,” Mohammed stated.
The meeting comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking after the meeting, the former Anambra State governor said the visit was focused on building national unity and strengthening cooperation across regions.
“My purpose is to solicit the support and cooperation of His Excellency and the stakeholders of Bauchi and the North-East in our quest to unite this country. We want to have a united country to build a future for our children.
“The country cannot continue the way it is today; we are headed in the wrong direction, and we need to reverse that for everybody. That is the simple purpose of why we are here—to seek the support of the stakeholders of Bauchi in building a new Nigeria that will be of benefit to all,” he added.
