Bullets from a firearm discharge killed the traditional head of Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, High Chief Akinwalere Akinola.
The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident, saying one suspect had been arrested in connection with the death.
Akinwalere was reportedly shot dead during the burial rites and ceremony of a fellow traditional chief in the community.
The incident reportedly happened on Tuesday while traditional rulers and other members of the community were carrying out funeral rites for their late colleague.
A source in the community said the bullet from the firearm discharge hit Akinola on the head.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “During the programme, a firearm was discharged. The bullet struck High Chief Akinwalere directly in the head, resulting in his instant death.”
Jimoh said an investigation had started to uncover the mystery around the occurrence.
“One suspect arrested. Meanwhile, thorough investigation has commenced,” the PPRO said.
