Popular Nigerian singer Aituaje Aina Vivian Ebele Iruobe popularly known as Waje, has opened up on her travails as single mother at the young age of 16.
Speaking in a podcast video, the singer said; the journey of raising her child was a very difficult one. She got pregnant at the age of 16 and hid the news from her mother for five months
According to her, when the mother eventually discovered, they went to meet the family of the young man responsible but he denied having a hand in her pregnancy.
“In Igbo land, when a child is born out of wedlock, the family automatically adopts the child. So, my mom just told him, ‘Okay, since it’s not you, the child is mine now,” she noted
Her mother had to take the responsibility of taking care of her and the child.
“I got pregnant when I was 16 years old and I didn’t tell my parents till the pregnancy got to 5 months. The owner of the pregnancy rejected me and the baby at the time but came back later when he was ok to claim the child and I kicked against it”, she explained.
But after several years, the man came back to apologize and to look for his child as he wanted to reconnect with his child.
This did not go down well with her but she has to cave in after much plea from her mother and other people. She agreed only, if he would dance to her conditions; part of which is to take their to Canada where he is a citizen.
Waje explained, “I told him, you’re a citizen of Canada, fight for your child. I wanted her to get the best education possible,”
She revealed that they also discussed about doing a DNA test to confirm the paternity of the child which the man kept delaying. She waited for years but he didn’t do it and by the time her daughter turned 18, it was difficult for him to file for her, she added.
