Benue indigenes seek justice as soldiers allegedly kill MOPOL officer in Delta

Indigenes of Igede, an ethnic group in Benue State are seeking justice over the death of their son, a MOPOL officer, named Fidelis Agbike, who hailed from Opirikwu, Yala, Igede-Eddi, and was brutally beaten to death by a troop of soldiers allegedly led by Sgt Baraya Shehu.

According to a source, Agbike rode to a drinking bar on a bike and mistakenly brushed the soldier, which led to an altercation, prompting the soldier to invite his colleagues to help in attacking the police officer.

A source averred, “Fidelis Agbike was a Mobile Police Officer, MOPOL. He rode to a bar they usually visit. While trying to get off his bike, he rode himself to the drinking joint, and on alighting, his leg brushed against a soldier named, Sgt. Baraya Shehu who was standing nearby.

“The moment that happened, the soldier slapped Fidelis and a fight broke out. The soldier, Sgt. Baraya Shehu later called his fellow soldiers who came and beat the MOPOL officer until he died yesterday.

“The man went out on his own, only to be killed by a fellow member of the security forces. Fidelis Agbike’s body has been deposited in the mortuary.”

His body is currently at Nwakaego Mafue-Mezia Memorial Hospital, Asaba, Delta State.
