Kano Blues: 1500 get beds, cash after govt mass wedding as woman severs boyfriend’s manhood

The Kano State Government on Friday tied the knot of 1,500 couples, including Haruna Bashir, the man who lost his wife and six children in a gruesome murder case.

The Kano State Chief Imam, Prof. Sani Zahradeen, presided over the symbolic mass wedding ceremony held at the Emir’s Palace, Kano.

Gov. Abba Yusuf stood as the representative of the grooms, while the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented the brides during the wedding.

Mr Bashir lost his wife and six children to the cold hands of death some months ago as a result of a gruesome murder.

Shedding more light on the ceremony, the Commander-General of the Kano Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim-Daurawa, said the wedding was symbolic and that the others would be conducted simultaneously in their respective Local Government Areas.

He confirmed that Haruna Bashir, who lost his wife and six children, was part of the symbolic ceremony.

The commander-general explained that the governor decided to sponsor Bashir to perform Hajj and lesser Hajj in the Holy land, gave him a house in Amana City, Kano, and married a new wife, Rahinatu Jamilu-Yunusa, for him.

“Ever since the incident that led to the death of his wife and six children, he doesn’t talk to anyone. But with this development, he is now bouncing back to normal life.

“The second wedding featured Saminu Tijjani-Isa as the groom, with his bride A’isha Muazu-Muhammad, and the third had Khalifa Muhammad-Inuwa as the groom with Maimuna Muhammad-Mu’azu as the bride,” Ibrahim-Daurawa said.

The governor, who served as representative of the grooms, described the initiative as a bold social intervention aimed at restoring hope, strengthening families, and promoting moral values across the state.

He said the programme underscores his administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable citizens by easing the financial burden associated with marriage and creating opportunities for dignified family life in line with Islamic principles and the rich cultural heritage of Kano.

Earlier, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, had delivered the Friday sermon, calling on the newly married couples to build their homes on the enduring values of faith, patience, mutual respect, and compassion.

He revealed that peaceful families remained the foundation of a stable and prosperous society.

The mass wedding programme featured lectures by respected Islamic Scholars and professionals on key aspects of marital life.

Sheikh Aliyu Abubakar delivered a presentation on: “The Wisdom of Marriage in Islam,” while Prof. Ibrahim Mu’azzam-Mai-Bushira spoke on: “The Rights and Responsibilities of Spouses in Islam.”

The beneficiaries also received guidance on the causes of marital conflicts and practical approaches to resolving them in accordance with Islamic teachings from Sheikh Muhammad Nur-Arzai.

Each bride will receive ₦200,000 to cover her dowry and provide start-up capital for a small business.

In addition, every bride will be presented with essential household items, including a set of bed and mattress, blankets, bed sheets, and a centre rug.

Meanwhile a court sitting in Kano on Friday ordered the remand of a 25-year-old woman, Maimuna Idris, in a correctional centre for allegedly cutting off her boyfriend’s manhood.

The victim is identified as Ashiru Sani.

Idris, who resides in Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa, is facing a two-count charge of attempted culpable homicide and causing grievous hurt.

The Prosecution Counsel, H.A. Sani-Buhari, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 27 at Badawa Quarters, Kano.

Sani-Buhari said that on the same date at about 12:50 p.m., the Badawa Police Division received a report from the management of Durbar Hotel, Badawa, Kano, that the defendant allegedly attacked her boyfriend with a sharp knife.

She said earlier, at about 11:00 a.m., the defendant allegedly severed her boyfriend’s manhood after discovering his intention to marry another woman.

“The victim was immediately rushed to Abubakar Imam Urology Hospital, Kano, for medical treatment,” she said.

The defendant, however, pleaded guilty to the charges.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes the provisions of sections 229 and 248 of the Penal Code.

The Judge, Magistrate Sadiya Usman, ordered the remand of the defendant in a correctional centre and adjourned the matter until September 9, for further mention.
