The Nigeria Police Council on Monday unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the Inspector-General of Police.

According to a statement by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the endorsement has paved the way for his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.

The ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting, scheduled for the same day.

The Council’s meeting, which took place at the State House, was presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and had in attendance Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in accordance with the Constitution.

Others in attendance were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; and the head of service, Mrs. Esther Didi Walson-Jack.

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who spoke glowingly about Disu, commended the Acting Inspector-General of Police for his exemplary services as a policeman, especially when he served as the commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos State between 2015 and 2021, where his tenure earned him and the RRS recognition for excellence in crime control.

Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, commended the President’s appointment of Disu, noting that it was based on his excellent career record.

Wike, who is a former governor of Rivers State, also lauded Disu for his efficiency as a crime fighter and for ensuring the command’s strategic impact in addressing security concerns within the territory.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State seconded the motion endorsing the appointment.

President Bola Tinubu appointed Disu as the acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has urged the new Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to provide decisive leadership in tackling insecurity across the country.

The Kwara Governor spoke with State House Correspondents on Monday after the Nigeria Police Council (NPC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.

The NPC confirmed Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, formally ratifying his appointment as Nigeria’s 23rd police boss.

Tinubu had earlier appointed Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police on Feb. 24, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

In line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Police Act, the appointment required confirmation by the NPC before assumption of office on a substantive basis.

The NGF chairman said the council carefully reviewed Disu’s service records, performance and recommendations before approving the appointment.

“At the deliberations, we went through his records, his performance in office and the recommendations.

“The council was glad to approve the recommendations for him to be appointed the Inspector-General of Police.” he said.

AbdulRazaq congratulated the new police boss and expressed confidence in his ability to deliver on the mandate.

“Congratulations to the new Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Disu,”

He stated that the council had high expectations of the new police chief amid ongoing security challenges across the country.

“He has his work cut out for him, especially in this age when there are increasing discussions around state police,” he said.

AbdulRazaq added that Disu’s previous assignments in Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) demonstrated his operational experience.

“He has been through major assignments in Lagos State and the FCT, so he has a record to show that he can perform.

“There are great expectations from the 36 states and the FCT, which he has to organise and coordinate.

“We wish him all the best and we look forward to working with him,” he said.
