INCESSANT ATTACKS: 2000 Niger state residents seeking refuge in Benin Republic, says Amnesty Int’l

Over 2000 natives of Dekera District in Niger state are currently seeking refuge in neighbouring Benin Republic, following the incessant attacks targeting the locals by terrorists.
This situation, according to global human rights group, Amnesty International, has been worsened by the fate of over 1000 residents in the area who faced excruciating torture in the hands of the hoodlums in the past couple of months following their abductions.
The Daily Monitor on Sunday learnt that the raids often took place in mosques, and have forced the locals to take the option of migrating to safer grounds in Benin Republic.
According to Amnesty International, “At least 2,000 people from Dekera District in Nigeria’s Niger state have fled into neighbouring Benin republic after the attacks recently in which hundreds of people were abducted during raids by gunmen on mosques in the area.
“Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and his government must urgently address the country’s horrifying spate of abductions targeting rural communities in the north, as at least 1,100 people have been abducted in three months – from January to April 2026.
“Those abducted are frequently subjected to torture, starvation, amputation, rape, forced to witness or commit atrocities. Many of the communities affected by the abductions have for years also endured frequent attacks by gunmen.
“Estimates of the number of abductions by gunmen and armed groups across Nigeria vary and some of the commonly cited figures vastly understate the scale of the problem.
“Borgu has been consistently attacked and right now face unprecedented tragedy of killings and displacements. Authorities must do more to prevent further attacks, rescue those abducted and bring to justice those suspected of being behind these atrocities.”
In response to the frequent attacks, the Nigerian Police Force led by IGP Tunde Disu had visited the communities, where he reassured the residents of Borgu and environs of their commitment towards their safety.
