Nasarawa State’s 2027 gubernatorial election is shaping up to be a complex and intense affair, with several prominent figures vying for the top spot.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is facing internal conflicts over zoning, with some aspirants pushing for a consensus candidate while others advocate for a direct primary.

Notable aspirants who have gained massive support across the state following their track records in public and private service are:

Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada:

A strong contender with a proven track record, having represented Nasarawa West and shown commitment to development. Some of his notable achievements include:

He’s built a strong network of supporters and stakeholders, positioning himself as a unifying force in Nasarawa politics.

Dr. Mohammed Musa Maikaya.

A geologist with the full potential to improving on the mineral sector and a philanthropist with a foundation supporting the underprivileged, demonstrating leadership and social responsibility.

Some of his notable achievements include: He

Established a foundation that provides scholarships, healthcare services, and economic empowerment programs, benefiting thousands of Nasarawa residents. He’s built a reputation as a servant leader, with a focus on community development and social welfare.

His grassroots presence and party loyalty have earned him recognition as a potential consensus candidate.

Dr. David Ombugadu:

Rumoured to be a likely candidate should the zoning arrangement fail is a recent APC joiner, already sparking speculation about Governor Sule’s influence. He’s a strong contender, but will face credibility challenges.

Dr. Faisal Shuaib:

A technocrat with a background in healthcare, seen as a fresh face in Nasarawa politics. However, he is well-positioned to take the number one position, but being a first timer, there is skepticism on his character owing to his relationship with the people when he was in service at the federal level.

For the former, IGP Mohammed Adamu, he is a seasoned politician with a strong security background, but his influence may be turned down as the APC is interested in retaining the governorship beyond 2027.

Why Wadada and Maikaya stand Out:

Both Wadada and Maikaya have demonstrated leadership and commitment to Nasarawa’s development.

Wadada’s legislative experience and network, combined with Maikaya’s grassroots presence and philanthropic work, make them strong contenders.

Wadada’s achievements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure development have improved lives and earned him recognition.

While Maikaya’s foundation has provided critical support to marginalized communities, showcasing his dedication to social welfare.

As the APC navigates internal conflicts, Wadada and Maikaya’s experience and achievements position them as strong candidates. Will they leverage their strengths to win over voters, or will other contestants capitalise on the APC’s divisions?
